HARBOUR SYMPHONY
A composition for ships' horns in the harbour at St. John's, Newfoundland

July 16, 2004

During his visit to Sound Symposium 2004 Philip composed a piece for ships' horns. Seven were in the harbour that day from all over the world. Each was given a time-grid score and all were synchronized over the emergency broadcast frequency.

If you listen carefully you may hear my phone number and some bell-change-ringing patterns.

The harbour is about 3 miles long so sound is delayed from one end to the other; each audience member hears a different rhythmic and spatial alignment. Over 200,000 people (some unwittingly) were in the audience over a ten mile radius.
