Burning Man 2002

Black Rock Desert, Nevada

Hentracks on Eternity, a performance/installation in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, August 2002, during Burning Man camp (attendance 29,000)
An acoustical spider's web of wind-driven high-tension wires emitting overtone clouds, rosined "string telephones," mylar tape howlers and flappers, combined with harmonic choir. Performed by the breeze, 14 fellow campers, and 12 members of Arjuna's Berkeley harmonic choir. Constructed with the assistance of, and filmed by, Preston Wright. Duration: installation— five days;

10-20 lengths of monofilament fishing line are attached to a Rebar anchor, threaded through a PVC arched bridge and stretched taut 20-50' to the other end. Each line pierces the base of a plastic Dixie cup to create a mobile friction drum. The line is covered with Rosin to increase friction and players may excite squawks and tones from each cup by lightly holding it and moving it along the length of the line. Up to 20 people can play simultaneously, barring crashes. Pitch is variable by grabbing the line with the other hand. Polystyrene cooler boxes near the anchor point may allow the lines to be played on the far side of each bridge with fingers alone.
